Inulin / FOS
Overview
Inulin and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are naturally occurring, indigestible fructan polysaccharides from chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, and other plants. Selectively stimulate growth of beneficial gut bacteria (Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli) — classic prebiotic effect — producing short-chain fatty acids (butyrate, propionate, acetate) via colonic fermentation that support intestinal barrier integrity and systemic immune modulation. Multiple RCTs demonstrate improved glycemic control, LDL reduction, and bowel regularity at 5–10 g/day. INTERACTIONS: may slow absorption of co-administered oral medications — separate by 1–2 hours; additive hypoglycemic effects with antidiabetic drugs; may reduce bioavailability of minerals at very high doses. High doses (>15g) commonly cause bloating, flatulence, and GI discomfort.
