Lavendelöl (Silexan)

Overview

Lavender oil (Silexan) is a patented, clinically studied oral supplement standardized from Lavandula angustifolia. Primary mechanism: inhibition of voltage-gated calcium channels (L-type and T-type), reducing glutamate release and synaptic excitability — resulting in anxiolytic and sedative effects without benzodiazepine-like receptor binding. Also shows partial 5-HT1A agonism. Multiple RCTs by Kasper et al. demonstrated efficacy of 80 mg/day Silexan vs. placebo and non-inferiority vs. lorazepam 0.5 mg for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and sleep disturbances. Meta-analyses confirm consistent effects on anxiety and sleep quality. Standard dose: 80 mg once daily (evening). Key interactions: additive CNS depression with benzodiazepines, sleep medications, antidepressants, and alcohol; mild CYP3A4 inhibition — caution with narrow-therapeutic-window substrates. Generally well tolerated; most common side effects are belching and nausea. Note: topical or aromatherapy use of lavender has a fundamentally different pharmacokinetic profile and interaction risk.
