Overview

Saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) extract (85–95% fatty acids and phytosterols) inhibits 5α-reductase (types I and II), reducing DHT formation. A network meta-analysis of 19 RCTs found saw palmetto showed higher hair regeneration scores vs. placebo in androgenetic alopecia. Also used for BPH urinary symptom relief (moderate evidence). Generally well tolerated; mild GI effects. May slightly reduce PSA levels — inform physician before PSA testing. Anticoagulant interaction possible. Contraindicated in pregnancy.
