Silizium (Kieselsäure)

Mineral Evidence: moderate

Overview

Silicon (as orthosilicic acid, Si(OH)4) is a trace element essential for collagen cross-linking, bone mineralization, and structural integrity of hair and nails. A placebo-controlled RCT found silicon-enriched spirulina reduced blood pressure (−8%) and aortic stiffness (−13.5%) in elderly individuals with elevated baseline values. Evidence for hair, skin, and nail benefits from smaller trials. Bioavailability varies significantly: ch-OSA® (choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid) is better absorbed than plant-derived silica. Generally well tolerated; no established upper limit.
