Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA)

Fatty Acid Evidence: strong

Overview

Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA, C18:3n-3, C18H30O2, CID 5280934) is an essential plant-derived omega-3 fatty acid found abundantly in flaxseed (55%), chia seeds (60%), walnuts (13%), and canola oil. Serves as biochemical precursor for EPA and DHA, but human enzymatic conversion is highly inefficient (5–10% to EPA; <1% to DHA). Strong epidemiological and prospective cohort evidence supports inverse association with cardiovascular mortality; multiple RCTs demonstrate anti-inflammatory effects via prostaglandin pathway modulation. NOTE: "ALA" is a shared abbreviation — Alpha-Linolenic Acid (omega-3) is entirely distinct from Alpha-Lipoic Acid (antioxidant). INTERACTIONS: additive anticoagulant/antiplatelet effects with warfarin, aspirin, and other blood thinners — monitor INR; may reduce absorption of fat-soluble medications. Generally safe at 1.5–3 g/day.
