Chondroitin
Overview
Chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan polymer forming part of cartilage extracellular matrix. A 2025 systematic review and Delphi consensus found chondroitin sulfate combined with low-dose diclofenac reduces knee OA pain and improves joint function. Evidence overall is mixed; effects appear primarily in moderate-to-severe OA. Generally well tolerated; GI side effects possible. Structural similarity to heparin may interact with anticoagulants. Quality and source vary significantly. Product quality and standardization are important.
