Catechin
Overview
Catechin (C15H14O6) is the foundational flavan-3-ol polyphenol found in tea, cocoa, red wine, and berries. The family includes epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, and EGCG (most active form). A meta-analysis of 281 RCTs found catechins significantly reduce blood pressure; dose-response confirmed. Mechanisms: radical scavenging, endothelial function improvement, NF-kB inhibition. Bioavailability limited; enhanced with food. EFSA safety limit: 338 mg EGCG/day from supplements to avoid hepatotoxicity. Inhibits non-heme iron absorption.

View details →Quercetin enhances catechin bioavailability by competing with catecholamine-metabolizing enzymes, reducing catechin degradation.

View details →Catechins protect fat-soluble antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamin E by reducing their oxidative depletion in blood plasma.
