Epigallocatechin Gallate
Overview
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG, C22H18O11) is the primary active catechin in green tea extract. Mechanisms: radical scavenging, DNMT1/HIF-1alpha inhibition, AMPK activation, pro-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory. A meta-analysis found green tea extract significantly reduced body weight (-1.78 kg), BMI (-0.64 kg/m2), and waist circumference (-1.93 cm). EFSA safety limit: 338 mg EGCG/day from supplements to minimize hepatotoxicity risk — doses >800 mg associated with liver damage. Bioavailability enhanced when taken fasted. Inhibits non-heme iron absorption.
