Selen
Overview
Selenium is an essential trace mineral involved in thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense, DNA synthesis, and immune function via selenoproteins. Adults need 55 mcg daily. Selenium has a narrow therapeutic window: the upper limit is 400 mcg/day (EFSA recommends 255 mcg). Chronic excess causes selenosis — hair and nail loss, metallic taste. Brazil nuts can contain up to 544 mcg/oz. Supplement only when dietary intake is insufficient.
