Ubiquinone
Overview
Coenzyme Q10 (C59H90O4) is a fat-soluble quinone essential for mitochondrial electron transport and ATP synthesis. Levels decline with age and are reduced by statins. A meta-analysis of 45 RCTs found CoQ10 significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (−3.44 mmHg). A separate meta-analysis confirmed CoQ10 reduces statin-associated muscle symptoms. Additional evidence supports heart failure mortality reduction (moderate certainty). Ubiquinol (reduced form) has superior bioavailability. Warfarin interaction: CoQ10 may reduce anticoagulant effect — monitor INR. Fat-soluble — take with food.
