Hops
Overview
Hops (Humulus lupulus L.) female flower (strobile) extract contains bitter acids (humulone, lupulone), the prenylated chalcone xanthohumol, and myrcene terpene. Primary mechanisms for sleep/anxiolytic effects include histamine release (drowsiness), GABA-A receptor potentiation, and melatonin pathway modulation. Multiple small RCTs in hop-valerian combination products demonstrate improved sleep latency and quality. Commonly combined with Valerian — additive sedation documented. INTERACTIONS: potentiates CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, alcohol, sedatives) — caution regarding excess sedation; theoretical estrogenic activity from 8-prenylnaringenin (most potent phytoestrogen known) — caution in hormone-sensitive conditions. Contraindicated in pregnancy. Generally well-tolerated at 300–500 mg/day.
