Olivenöl extra vergine

Oil Evidence: strong

Overview

Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) provides oleic acid and polyphenols including hydroxytyrosol (C8H10O3), oleuropein, and oleocanthal. EFSA-approved claim: olive oil polyphenols protect LDL from oxidative damage. A meta-analysis of 10 studies found high-phenolic EVOO significantly reduced CRP and modestly improved kidney function (eGFR) in CKD patients. Best used as a food ingredient within a Mediterranean dietary pattern. Polyphenol content varies significantly — only certified high-phenolic EVOO provides documented health benefits.
