Oreganoöl

Herb Evidence: emerging

Overview

Oregano oil (Origanum vulgare essential oil) is a botanical supplement standardized to carvacrol (typically 60–80%) and thymol as primary bioactive compounds. Human clinical evidence exists for carvacrol specifically: a meta-analysis of 10 RCTs (PMID 39992592, n=562) on the closely related Zataria multiflora (same primary bioactive) showed significant reductions in IL-6, CRP, IL-8, and MCP-1; separate RCTs demonstrated improved pulmonary function in asthmatic patients and chemical warfare victims (PMIDs 33773189, 30961947, 30075886); a Phase I trial confirmed safety at 1–2 mg/kg/day in healthy subjects (PMID 30486682). In vitro studies confirm antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. mutans, and C. albicans. Caveat: RCTs used isolated carvacrol, not oregano oil as a supplement — direct OEO product trials in healthy populations are lacking. Typical supplement doses: 150–200 mg per dose, 1–3 times daily with meals (no validated clinical protocol). Main adverse effect: GI upset, especially on empty stomach. Potential mild anticoagulant activity (carvacrol, thymol) — relevant before surgery or with blood thinners. Affirmed GRAS as food flavoring by FEMA (2021).
