Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) contains flavonoids — primarily chrysin, vitexin, and orientin — that modulate GABA-A receptors, producing anxiolytic and mild sedative effects. A systematic review of 9 RCTs found reduced anxiety with no documented adverse effects. Traditionally used for anxiety, sleep disturbances, and nervous restlessness. Generally well tolerated. Additive CNS depression with sedatives, benzodiazepines, and alcohol. Contraindicated in pregnancy due to possible uterotonic effects.
