Schisandra chinensis
Overview
Schisandra chinensis (Wu Wei Zi) is an adaptogenic herb containing dibenzocyclooctadiene lignans (schisandrin, schisandrin B, gomisin A) that modulate stress resilience and hepatoprotection. Clinical doses of 1.5–3 g/day show emerging evidence for stress reduction and cognitive function improvement. CRITICAL INTERACTION: Schisandra is a potent CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein inhibitor — significantly increases plasma concentrations of CYP3A4-dependent drugs including statins, immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, tacrolimus), antivirals, and benzodiazepines. Contraindicated with tacrolimus and cyclosporine. Emerging evidence level for adaptogenic claims; mechanistic evidence for hepatoprotection is stronger.
