Overview
Iodine is an essential trace mineral required to synthesize thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which regulate metabolism and fetal neurological development. Adults need 150 mcg daily; pregnant women 220 mcg. Upper limit is 1,100 mcg/day. Both deficiency and excess harm thyroid function: deficiency causes hypothyroidism and goiter; excess can inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis and trigger autoimmune thyroid disease. Seaweed contains highly variable iodine levels. People with thyroid conditions should consult a doctor before supplementing.
