Overview

Flaxseed oil is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3n-3), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. Conversion to EPA and DHA in humans is limited (<15%), making it a poor substitute for marine omega-3s. Adequate intake: 1.1–1.6 g ALA/day. Also contains phytoestrogenic lignans (secoisolariciresinol). Susceptible to oxidative rancidity; refrigeration required. Blood-thinning effect: caution with anticoagulants. Not interchangeable with fish oil for EPA/DHA-specific benefits.
