5-Hydroxytryptophan
Overview
Amino acid precursor derived from Griffonia simplicifolia seeds. Directly elevates serotonin levels in the brain. Clinical dosing is use-case dependent: 200 mg/day for mood and sleep support, 300 mg/day for anxiety, up to 900 mg/day (in studies) for appetite control. More bioavailable than L-tryptophan since it crosses the blood-brain barrier without competing amino acid interference.
Dosage
200 mg · Evening · Take with food
Key Interactions
6 verified interactions found
Both 5-HTP and tryptophan are serotonin precursors. Combining them leads to excessive serotonergic activity and risk of serotonin syndrome (characterized by agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, muscle rigidity).
Do not combine 5-HTP with tryptophan supplements.

View details →L-tryptophan increases circulating 5-hydroxytryptophan in a dose-dependent manner.
View details →Only high doses of 5-HTP reverse hyperactivity in certain brain lesion models, unlike other treatments.
View details →5-Hydroxytryptophan competes with proline for cell membrane transporters.
