Glucosamine
Overview
Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is an amino monosaccharide essential for cartilage proteoglycan biosynthesis (chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid). A meta-analysis found glucosamine (crystalline sulfate form, alone or combined with chondroitin) significantly improves pain and function in knee osteoarthritis, non-inferior to pharmacological treatment for 12 months; potential disease-modifying effects. Glucosamine sulfate is the best-studied form (pCGS). Shellfish-derived — fungal alternatives available. Minimal INR effects with anticoagulants. Monitor blood glucose in diabetics. Effects require 4-8 weeks to manifest.
