Eisen
Overview
Iron is an essential mineral for hemoglobin in red blood cells to transport oxygen. It exists as heme iron (animal products, better absorbed) and non-heme iron (plants). Adults need 8–18 mg daily depending on sex and age; premenopausal women need 18 mg. Upper limit is 45 mg/day. Vitamin C enhances iron absorption; calcium and tea tannins inhibit it. Supplement only when deficiency is confirmed; contraindicated in hereditary hemochromatosis.
