Molybdenum
Overview
Molybdenum (Mo, atomic number 42) is an essential trace mineral functioning as cofactor for four critical enzymes: sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component (MARC). These enzymes are essential for sulfite detoxification, purine/pyrimidine catabolism, and xenobiotic metabolism. Dietary requirement met by legumes, grains, and organ meats; clinical deficiency is extremely rare (isolated cases in total parenteral nutrition). EU RDA: 50 mcg/day; Tolerable Upper Intake Level: 600 mcg/day. At physiologic supplemental doses, no known drug interactions. HIGH-DOSE CAUTION: >600 mcg/day may compete with copper absorption (monitor copper status); joint pain and hyperuricemia reported at extremely high doses (10–15 mg/day).
