Carnosine
Overview
Carnosine (β-alanyl-L-histidine, C9H14N4O3) is an endogenous dipeptide found in muscle and brain tissue. Functions: antioxidant, anti-glycation agent, muscle pH buffering, and zinc chelation. A preclinical review confirmed antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Excellent safety profile — lacks significant toxicity or side effects suitable for long-term use. Oral bioavailability varies due to serum carnosinase hydrolysis. Zinc-L-carnosine is a related but distinct compound. No established upper limit.

Carnosine supplementation increases muscle carnosine levels fivefold and histidine twofold.
