Serine

Amino Acid Evidence: moderate

Overview

Serine (C3H7NO3) is a non-essential hydroxyl amino acid essential for phospholipid and sphingolipid synthesis, glutathione production, and NMDA receptor co-agonist D-serine production. A Phase I clinical trial found L-serine supplementation (up to 15 g/day) produced a dose-related ~34% decrease in ALS progression rate, hypothesized to buffer against environmental neurotoxin BMAA. Safety confirmed at high doses. Investigational for neurodegenerative conditions. No EFSA-authorized health claims. Generally adequate via dietary protein.

Berberine Info

Berberine suppresses serine phosphorylation of insulin signaling proteins, enhancing glucose uptake through improved tyrosine phosphorylation.

Manganese Info

Manganese decreases serine phosphorylation of Huntingtin protein in neurons.

Sulforaphane reduces hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress and suppresses AKT signaling, protecting cells from diabetes-related damage.

Sulforaphan kann laut präklinischer Daten bestimmte Serin-Phosphorylierungswege hemmen, was die zelluläre Signalgebung beeinflusst. Eine gleichzeitige Einnahme ist unbedenklich.

Mutations replacing key amino acids with serine and phenylalanine in vitamin K epoxide reductase significantly reduce its enzymatic activity, affecting blood clotting and bone metabolism.

Thiamine (B1) enables serine incorporation into proteins, playing a critical role in protein synthesis when the vitamin is deficient.
