Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol)

Antioxidant Evidence: strong

Overview

Pycnogenol® is a standardized extract from French maritime pine bark (Pinus pinaster) containing 70% procyanidins (OPCs), catechins, taxifolin, and phenolic acids. Inhibits NF-κB-mediated inflammation, enhances nitric oxide synthesis (eNOS upregulation), and scavenges free radicals. Mechanistic evidence is strong; however, a 2012 Cochrane review (15 RCTs, 791 participants) concluded evidence remains insufficient for treating any specific chronic condition due to small sample sizes and heterogeneity. Emerging evidence for endothelial function, ADHD in children, and osteoarthritis. At 150–300 mg/day, well-tolerated with minimal adverse events. INTERACTIONS: theoretical additive antiplatelet effects with warfarin/aspirin — caution; may potentiate antihypertensives. No major drug-drug interactions documented.
