St John's Wort
Overview
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) contains hyperforin (inhibits serotonin/noradrenaline/dopamine reuptake) and hypericin. Effective for mild-to-moderate depression (comparable to SSRIs in reviews). Critical safety: potent CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein inducer — significantly reduces blood levels of oral contraceptives, warfarin, antiretrovirals, cyclosporine, and many other drugs. Fatal serotonin syndrome risk with SSRIs and serotonergic agents. Hypericin causes photosensitivity. Contraindicated in bipolar disorder.
