Alpha-lipoic acid

Antioxidant Evidence: moderate

Overview

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA, C8H14O2S2) is a mitochondrial cofactor and both water- and fat-soluble antioxidant, regenerating glutathione and vitamins C and E. A systematic review of 76 clinical studies found ALA demonstrated consistent efficacy for pain reduction in diabetic neuropathy. Also studied for metabolic syndrome and blood glucose. Well tolerated; may lower blood glucose — caution with diabetes medications. R-ALA is more bioavailable than racemic mixtures. No established upper limit.

Dosage

200 mg · Any time · Can take on empty stomach

Key Interactions

37 verified interactions found

Acetylcarnitine Caution

Alpha-lipoic acid and acetylcarnitine work together to support mitochondrial function and improve brain health by reducing cellular damage.

Resveratrol Caution

Resveratrol and alpha-lipoic acid together protect cells more effectively than either compound alone.

Leucine Caution

Alpha-lipoic acid significantly enhances the cellular conversion and utilization of branched-chain amino acids like leucine and valine.

EGCG combined with alpha-lipoic acid shows greater anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects than EGCG alone.
