Astaxanthin
Overview
Astaxanthin (C40H52O4) is a xanthophyll carotenoid from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae, one of the most potent natural antioxidants. Lipophilic; bioavailability significantly improved with dietary fat. Applications include exercise recovery, skin protection, eye health, and cardiovascular support. Very well tolerated; high doses may cause reversible carotenodermia (skin discoloration). Possible mild estrogenic activity — caution with hormone-sensitive conditions. Natural algal form preferred over synthetic. No established upper limit.

Using valine as the sole nitrogen source increases astaxanthin production in microorganisms, but significantly slows cell growth and reproduction.

View details →Potassium and acetate together dramatically increase astaxanthin production in cell cultures.
