Valine
Overview
Valine (C5H11NO2) is an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) metabolized in skeletal muscle; purely glucogenic. A systematic review of 20 RCTs found BCAA supplementation (leucine, isoleucine, valine) significantly improved muscle mass and albumin levels and reduced serious complications in liver cirrhosis — an established therapeutic application. Standard BCAA ratio: Leu:Ile:Val = 2:1:1. Contraindicated in maple syrup urine disease (MSUD). Caution with renal insufficiency and levodopa (competition for BBB transport).

View details →Using valine as the sole nitrogen source increases astaxanthin production in microorganisms, but significantly slows cell growth and reproduction.
View details →Glutamate and branched-chain amino acids together upregulate amino acid biosynthetic enzyme expression through overlapping signaling pathways.
