Boswellia (Weihrauch)
Overview
Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) resin extract contains boswellic acids; AKBA is the most potent anti-inflammatory component, acting via inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) and NF-κB. A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis (Bannuru et al.) found Boswellia extract was significantly more effective than placebo for pain and function in knee osteoarthritis. Generally well tolerated; most common side effects are gastrointestinal. Caution advised with anticoagulants and immunosuppressants.
