Ginkgo biloba

Herb Evidence: strong

Overview

Ginkgo biloba leaf extract (EGb761: 24% flavonoids, 6% terpenoids) has been studied for cognitive decline and dementia. A 2015 meta-analysis of 9 RCTs (n=2,561) found EGb761 at 240 mg/day stabilizes cognitive decline and improves neuropsychiatric symptoms. Ginkgolide B is a platelet-activating factor (PAF) antagonist. Key safety concern: significant bleeding risk when combined with warfarin, aspirin, or NSAIDs. Rare seizure reports noted. Only standardized extracts (EGb761) should be used.
