Gamma-Linolenic Acid
Overview
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, C18H30O2) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (18:3 n-6) from evening primrose oil (9-10% GLA) and borage oil (20-25%). GLA converts to DGLA, producing anti-inflammatory eicosanoids (PGE1 series). A meta-analysis of 4 RCTs found GLA-rich evening primrose oil significantly reduced hot flash severity (not frequency) in menopausal women. The delta-6-desaturase step limiting LA to GLA conversion makes direct supplementation valuable. Contraindicated with phenothiazines (seizure threshold reduction). Antiplatelet activity — caution with anticoagulants.
