Citrulline
Overview
L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid converted to arginine in the kidneys, bypassing hepatic arginase degradation — making it a more effective oral nitric oxide precursor than arginine. Used for exercise performance, blood pressure support, and erectile dysfunction. A meta-analysis of 7 RCTs found no significant effect on inflammatory biomarkers or oxidative stress post-exercise. Generally well tolerated; additive blood-pressure-lowering effect with antihypertensives. Avoid combining with PDE5 inhibitors without medical advice.

View details →Citrulline substitution for histidine at specific amino acid positions dramatically increases the potency of therapeutic peptides.
View details →Agmatine and L-NAME (a nitric oxide synthase blocker) both reduce the increase in L-citrulline levels, suggesting that nitric oxide synthesis is involved in citrulline production.
View details →Valine blocks citrulline production by inhibiting arginase, the enzyme that makes citrulline from arginine.
View details →Manganese substitutes for another metal in an enzyme, producing citrulline at 65% efficiency.
