Ornithine
Overview
L-Ornithine (C5H12N2O2) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid central to the urea cycle (ammonia detoxification) and polyamine biosynthesis. L-ornithine L-aspartate (LOLA) is an established therapeutic for hepatic encephalopathy: a meta-analysis found LOLA more effective than placebo in reversing minimal hepatic encephalopathy and preventing progression, confirmed by ammonia reduction. Ornithine-alpha-ketoglutarate (OKG) is investigated for growth hormone stimulation. Renal caution at high doses. No EFSA-authorized health claims for standalone ornithine supplementation.

View details →Excessive lysine reduces arginine availability and decreases ornithine formation, impairing urea cycle function and causing orotic acid accumulation.
View details →Arginine-family amino acids (including ornithine) inhibit renal reabsorption of histidine through competitive transport mechanisms.
