Methylselenocysteine
Overview
Se-methylselenocysteine (C4H9NO2Se) is a bioavailable organic selenium compound from selenium-accumulating plants (Allium, Brassica), metabolized via beta-lyase to methylselenol (active antiproliferative form). A clinical trial review found large cancer prevention trials with selenomethionine failed; methylselenol precursors including MSC showed superior preclinical antiproliferative activity warranting further human investigation. Selenium form is critical for biological efficacy. EFSA upper limit: 300 mcg total selenium/day. Selenium toxicity (selenosis) occurs above 400 mcg/day.

Methylselenocysteine bioaccumulates in lung, liver, and serum tissues.
